A fabulous guest: Sara's Super Skin Care Regimen!

Hi All!

I hope you are doing well!

Throughout these past few weeks I have been busy as a bee working on a project with my choir so obviously blogging went flying out the window!

Today's post is extra special since I have a fabulous guest called Sara who reached out to me with an informative post on her skin care regime!

Martina XOXO

Hello lovelies! I’m Sara and I am so excited to tell you about my skincare regimen that took my skin from pimply to near-perfect. But before I start, I want to give a huge thank you to Martina for letting me write this for her! Thanks girl!

I used to use a lot of acne products in the hopes of clearing my skin but none would ever work. A pimple would disappear and another one would pop up elsewhere the next day! I used to wash my face with Murad’s Clarifying Cleanser and moisturize with Neutrogena’s Healthy Skin night cream. I always had some minor acne and redness but I was turning 20 at the time so I knew my skin needed a change. There came a point when all I wanted was clear skin. That’s it; not a new car or a cute boyfriend—just clear skin!  I realized that I had to start investing in a few higher-quality products, but I vowed to only purchase what was really necessary.

After some trial and error, I finally pinpointed a routine that works! Here are the steps I take to achieve a fresh face on a tight budget:

v  Purpose’s Gentle Cleansing Wash (which can be found at most drugstores) is “clinically shown to be as gentle as water” and I believe it. I’ve never been irritated by this cleanser and it’s great for day and night. It is so light--it literally feels like nothing is on your face. Cetaphil’s cleanser is just as gentle, but a tad pricier.

v  Skinn Cosmetics DermAppeal Microdermabrasion from ShopHQ is my go-to at home microdermabrasion treatment. The amount of times a week you exfoliate depends upon the product you use and your skin type, but for the most part you should exfoliate about 2-3 times per week. If you don’t already, you should definitely do it! Dead skin cells, sebum (oil), bacteria and/or hormones are the building blocks of acne, so don’t let that gunk pile up. When I use the DermAppeal microdermabrasion product, I wash my face and pat it dry and then I splash warm water all over. I spoon out a generous quarter-sized blob with a dry spoon and I massage my face in big, slow circular motions. The active ingredients are triggered with water, so you don’t want to put your fingers in the jar. Finally, I hop in the shower, do my deal and rinse all of the product off. It’s much easier to do it this way because the magnesium granules take a few minutes to wash off. The results are wonderful! I always use this on a Friday so I look all glowy and magical when I go out later that night. J

v  Another type of exfoliant I use is called GlamGlow SuperMud activated charcoal mask and boy, is this stuff super! Ask anyone in the beauty biz and they’ll give a nod to this stuff for its detoxifying properties. It’s a chemical exfoliant with both Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids (AHAs & BHAs) so it leaves your skin really smooth. This mask has a sort of vacuum technology that just draws the goop out of your pores and shrinks your pimples. I do a spot treatment with this every couple of days and when I want to do a full mask, I make sure it’s on a day when I’m not using my Skinn microderm. This product is a little on the pricey side but it’s totally worth it. If you’re not ready to splurge, try the Origins Clear Improvement charcoal mask for a little freshening up!

v  The final step in my skincare regimen is the Purely Nourishing moisturizer from Bare Essentials. This is like a dream to apply. My skin thanks me every night when I slather it on! It has an ActiveSoil complex which means it’s formulated with a good amount of potent antioxidants. Keeping your skin moisturized is extremely important, so if your skin isn’t as dry as mine, try a lighter cream like the Philosophy Take a Deep Breath. I use this in the summer months so I don’t break out.

It’s pretty amazing how 4 products can really make a difference in a girl’s life but it’s true! I went from perpetual pimples and constant redness to just a few blackheads on my nose and pinkness on my cheeks.  Gals, it’s all about quality, not quantity, so if you’re unsatisfied with your skin do something about it and invest in a few products! Don’t get frustrated when you buy something and it doesn’t do wonders for you—to find the perfect skincare regimen for you, you’re going to have to do a little trial and error. The most important thing is to have fun with it!!

Thanks for reading! J

A Fabulous Guest- To Beard or not to Beard

Gail's backkk!!! Check out her last post here:

Three times a week, I grace my hometown gym with my presence, rushing in with trainers untied and looking scruffy at around 7. I've been going there for the last six months punching and kicking my way in a totally inelegant frenzy. Lately my eyes always seem to land on bearded male homo sapiens frequenting it. Maybe it’s a new curiosity I've picked up but bearded guys have an extra luster to their persona and appearance that pulls me like a magnet.

This one particularly macho looking bearded guy surrounded by two fiery red-haired girls has tweaked my interest. They are always there without a fail whispering in each other’s ears as if anyone could really hear them. They smile, flirt and fix their hair tidily. They are pretty and they are there to work out but definitely not working up a sweat and obviously keen to make an impression on this bearded specimen who we shall call for the time being Hercules.

Hercules flexes his muscles in front of the mirror. Hercules does weight lifts easily and precariously without as much as a hint of a twinge. Hercules is one of them boys, whose beard makes me weak in the knees. Don’t get me wrong! I never quite had a thing for beards but lately I've been developing a weird fascination with facial hair (and I don’t mean my own).

Sometimes we manage to make eye contact. He stands there not sure what to make of it while I’m jumping up and down, red-puffed, hair stuck to my sweaty face and wearing some ridiculous t-shirt with some lame joke. He, on the other hand, has well groomed hair combed parted perfectly to the right hand side, chiseled cheeks and making working out look like a breeze.

Then again, all the ladies attending my Kick Aerobics class also look pristine without breaking much of a sweat. This is for all of you ladies who look less than ladylike at the gym. Them macho bearded men make this silly world go round and definitely a whole lot more appealing.

In between listening to ridiculous hours of music and writing about various topics and peculiarities, Gail finds time to ponder over the preposterous happenings in life. Having just hit 30, her pace is now slower but her sense of humour greater. Embark on this journey and follow this trail of madness we call life. Have a laugh and exasperate all rolled into one!

A Fabulous Guest- 5 Things you should know before moving abroad!

Hi Guys,

So today I thought I would give the blogging stage to my good friend Gail who was willing to share some of her thoughts on certain topics! Enjoy!

Martina XOXO

The grass is always greener on the other side or so they say. You’ve packed your life into boxes. You’re excited about the imminent move abroad and seeing your future with rose tinted glasses. It’s romantic, adventurous and exhilarating. You’re itching to go and start afresh as happier times lie just around the corner. Having lived abroad for over a year, here are the 5 things you should keep in mind and be prepared for.
  • Homesickness. It will hit you faster than you can say “I’m being followed by a pack of llamas”. You will miss the oddest things: From that lame whiskey advert on Italian TV to that annoying jingle playing on your fave radio station, your neighbours’ exasperating music tastes and the local “hamalli” speeding up late at night; no one’s spared.
  • It’s extortionate. Everything abroad is ridiculously more expensive than it is in Malta. From a Jack Coke to luscious sliced bread, you will find yourself forking out more money than you ever did.
  • The wildness factor. Foreigners like to have a good time as much as the Maltese but what are the chances of bars and clubs being open all night, reachable in a matter of minutes and a series of shenanigans on a weekly basis in a foreign country without ending homeless and broke
  • Savings. If you’ve made the big move, you have probably saved enough cash to get you started in another country. Have at least 7 months of living savings before making the move to cover housing costs and emergencies. Otherwise, you’re just an idiot.
  • Xenophobia. Alas, xenophobia is still rife around the world. Understand that your best bet is to be patient and nice to everyone around you. Remember that you don’t have to be liked by everyone but expect the unexpected. Just don’t forget to leave burning poop outside their homes.....Kidding, kidding!

Fabulous Guests: Jessica and Rachel from Beauty is our Passion!

Hey Guys,

Today we are hosting two new fabulous Maltese Bloggers, Jessica and Rachel from Beauty is our Passion!!

Back to school Wardrobe essentials

Hi Beauties,

School is around the corner and everyone is thinking about school supplies, meeting new friends, beauty items and most essential cute, simple yet comfortable outfits.

Everyone has different opinions and styles according to their outfits. Today, we are showcasing several outfit ideas for back to school.  Just make sure the outfits are school appropriate.

Outfits

Blue Fever (Outfit 1):

Go bold with a beautiful blue buttoned shirt paired with camel coloured straight leg jeans. Big black bag in order to fit all school supplies and goes perfectly with every coloured outfit.

Summer Outfit (Outfit 2):

White t-shirt paired with black trousers and neutral coloured accessories.

Laid back Outfit (Outfit 3):

Striped hooded zip up perfect for the winter times paired with a dark wash jeans. Try matching this outfit with high top wedges for a modern look.

Nautical Outfit (Outfit 4):

Striped low cut shirt paired with white wash jeans, cute ballerinas and a pop of cobalt blue belt. Jazz your outfit by accessorizing with a stretch black bracelet and sparkly black studs.

School Hairstyles

Similar to the previous outfits, hair styles differ from one person to another, according to style preference and face frames. During school it is effective to do effortless styles in order to be, less time consuming and enjoyable when having a bad hair day.

Rachel suggests of doing a high ponytail with the bangs pulled back. This hairstyle gives the impression that you gave such effort in this look while being simple yet stylish.

On the other hand, Jessica suggests doing a high messy bun. Same to the previous hairstyle it is easy to do and requires minimal effort. The messy bun looks amazing when styled with t shirts in order to show it off looking marvelous wherever you go.

Makeup look

We both agree that makeup should be minimal on school days. Most important items are concealer, powder (optional), mascara and white or flesh tone eyeliner.

Concealer is used in order to brighten the under eyes. Powder is used according to your preference. We both agreed on this item since, we both have oily skin and this will prevent any oil or shine on the face, and setting the makeup giving a nice all overall finish. White eyeliner is used to open up the eyes making them bigger and brighter. Similar to the previous items, mascara is used to make the eyes appear bigger and having some definition.

Feedback is much appreciated. Make sure to follow our blog and facebook page, linked below for more updates. Last but not least, thanking Martina and Denise from All things fabulous for giving us this opportunity to feature in their blog.

Take Care,
Jessica & Rachel

A Fabulous Guest: A post by Lara from Every Beauty Addict's Bible!

Hi Guys!!

Today we have another special post for you!! Our dear friend Lara from Every Beauty Addict's Bible.

Taking Care of your Cuticles

Hello loves! I am Lara from Every Beauty Addict’s Bible and today, I have been given the privilege to write this guest post for my friends Martina & Denise.

I have decided to tackle the subject of cuticle care because in my freelance job as a nail technician I get to meet different women from different backgrounds but most of them have one thing in common... they do not know what a cuticle is and how to take proper care of them.  Even more so, ones who are past a certain age will tell you that they used to cut their cuticles off and there are some manicurists who still cut off clients’ cuticles to this very date!

So let me start by explaining the anatomy of the nail and the role of cuticles first and then I will give you some tips on how you can care for your cuticles at home without spending a fortune!

A nail is mostly made-up of a protein known as keratin, so the nail is essentially dead (in fact, dead skin cells are termed to be ‘keratinized’ cells).  The only living part of a nail is the matrix, from which the nail gets the necessary nutrients to grow strong.

The nail matrix is protected by the cuticle is that thin strip around the base of the nail that protects the new cells underneath from infection or damage. Therefore, the cuticle grows from the finger to overlap and protect the nail plate and form a rim around the base of the nail.

The cuticle is perhaps the most important part of the nail, protecting both the nail matrix and with its delicate tissues and cells below the nail plate which are actively forming the hard nail. Its purpose is to protect against debris, fungi and bacteria that can damage the matrix and the nail bed.

Gentleness is key when caring for your cuticles, since vigorous trimming and pushing them back as well as the use of harsh chemical solvents may cause ridges in the nail. Therefore, wearing rubber gloves while doing house chores helps protect both your hands and cuticles.

A key point to note is that once the cuticle is damaged, the watertight space under the nail fold is laid open to moisture and becomes a potential breeding ground for bacteria, which can lead to a number of unwanted infections.

Cuticle care is therefore the cornerstone of a good manicure and impeccable looking hands; hence, cutting them off is not a solution as this will only create an open way for bacteria to enter your body and it could have serious repercussions.

Taking proper care of your cuticles shouldn’t take you more than 5 minutes a day and besides making sure that your cuticles are in tip top condition, this will also help strengthen your nails! Here are a few tips on how to take care of your cuticles:

-  Gently push back your cuticles with an orange stick right after a bath or shower or after soaking your nails in water for some time. You will achieve a neater result and they will be softer to work on.

- Never cut your cuticles. Besides leaving you prone to infections, this will make cuticles become tougher and thicker than before.  If you think you need to have your cuticles trimmed, always consult a professional manicurist or nail technician.

- Use a cuticle moisturizing oil on a daily basis. This helps strengthen the nails as well as soften and condition dry cuticles. If you don't have cuticle oil, you can use baby oil or olive oil.  You can also fit in a weekly cuticle scrub.

- Apply a highly moisturizing hand cream frequently, preferably after each time you wash your hands. Use one with a pump dispenser, that way you'll be more inclined to use it. Also, try slathering on a thick layer of hand cream (or body cream on your feet) before you go to bed and wear an old pair of gloves (or socks!) and sleep in them... by morning your hands and feet will be baby soft!

I hope you found this post useful and don’t hesitate to ask me your questions on my facebook pages!

Special thanks go to Martina & Denise for giving me the opportunity to write a guest-blog post for them!

DEAR READERS,

ALOHA! FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE NO IDEA WHO I AM, LET ME INTRODUCE MYSELF. I GO BY THE NAME OF MARIE CLAIRE, BUT I'M USUALLY CALLED WITH AN ABBREVIATED VERSION... M.C! I'M 18 YEARS OLD, ONGOING 19 PRETTY SOON! I LIKE TO BELIEVE THAT I WAS REALLY BORN IN BEVERLY HILLS, BUT I SOMEHOW ENDED UP IN MALTA INSTEAD.

I'M QUITE THE FAMILY-ORIENTED TYPE OF PERSON, POSSESSING A GENTLE AND PATIENT NATURE. FASHION AND MUSIC ARE MY PASSION, WHILE THE TV SHOWS I WATCH ARE MY FANATICISM. FEEL FREE TO VISIT MY BLOG TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT MY CRAZINESS!

I HAVE A VERY WEIRD AFFILIATION WITH RIHANNA. I DISLIKED HER IN THE EARLY DAYS OF HER CAREER, THEN CAME THE VERY MUCH ALLURING 'RUSSIAN ROULETTE' APPEARANCE AND I ADORED IT! I REMEMBER DANCING MY ASS OFF TO HER TUNES EVERY SATURDAY NIGHT AND EAGERLY CONTEMPLATING ON GETTING THE SIGNATURE RIHANNA PIXIE HAIR CUT! (WHICH I STILL DO BTW)

MUSIC TASTES ASIDE, NO ONE CAN DENY THAT RIHANNA HAS BECOME ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC PEOPLE IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY! SHE IS BRINGING BACK MANY TRENDS AND UNLIKE MADONNA OR LADY GAGA, SHE IS NOT UP THERE TO 'REINVENT' TRENDS.

HER WHOLE STYLE IS VERY BIKER CHIC, HOWEVER I PERSONALLY FIND IT DIFFICULT TO PIN DOWN HER STYLE AND DESCRIBE IT. SHE CHANGES IT UP ALL THE TIME.

IN AN INTERVIEW WITH SEVENTEEN MAGAZINE SHE REVEALED THE IT DOESN'T TAKE AS MUCH PLANNING AS ONE WOULD THINK TO LOOK THAT GOOD.

"Well, I love playing with fashion.
I'm very spontaneous - the best outfits from me
come from not thinking about it.
When I was growing up in Barbados,
I actually learned about
 fashion from reading magazines
 and tearing out stuff that
 I thought was hot."

SO I FIGURED I'D RATHER SHARE WITH YOU SOME PICTURES OF WHEN I THINK RIHANNA HAS WORE IT BEST, THAN TRYING TO EXPLAIN SOMETHING WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF MESSING IT ALL UP. HERE GOES...

AT THE 2007 GRAMMY AWARDS, RIRI SPORTS THIS ROBERTO CAVALLI GREEN DRESS.

RIHANNA PLAYS WITH COLOUR IN THIS GIAMBATTISTA VALLI RUFFLE DOWN AT THE 2008 BET AWARDS IN L.A.

RIHANNA SPORTS AN OMINOUS ALEXANDER McQUEEN PRE-FALL JUMPSUIT AND MASION MARTIN MARGIELA SHOE BOOTS AT THE UK PREMIER OF INGLORIOUS BASTARDS.

RIHANNA APPEARS ON THE RED CARPET WEARING A CUT-OUT BLACK AND WHITE MARCHESA DRESS WITH ORANGE HAIR AT THE 2009 AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS.

RUFFLED AND VICTORIAN! RIHANNA APPEARS AT THE 2010 GRAMMY'S IN AN ELIE SAAB HAUTE COUTURE PIECE FROM THE "ALL WHITE COLLECTION".

RIHANNA ROCKS OUT ON AMERICAN IDOL IN AN OUTFIT REMINISCENT OF MICHAEL JACKSON'S CAPTAIN NEO.

THIS IS WHEN HER HAIR REALLY BECAME THE ACCESSORY TO THE DRESS! THE DARK SCARLET MATCHES PERFECTLY WITH HER CURLY BOB.

A CLASSIC! AT THE 2011 GRAMMY AWARDS, RIHANNA WEARS A JEAN-PAUL GAULTIER COUTURE DRESS

BEING FAMOUS FOR THIS LONG, HAVING A LIFESTYLE COLLECTION AND SEVERAL CELEBRITY FRAGRANCES UNDER HER BELT, I ALWAYS WONDERED WHEN THE BIG DAY OF LAUNCHING HER OWN CLOTHING LINE WOULD COME, UNTIL MY PRAYERS WERE HEARD!

RIHANNA RELEASED A CAPSULE COLLECTION FOR EMPORIO ARMANI UNDERWEAR AND ARMANI JEANS. SHE'S ALREADY THE FACE AND BODY AND CURRENT SPOKESPERSON FOR THE BRAND, SO IT ONLY MAKES SENSE THAT HER FIRST FORAY INTO FASHION IS IN COLLABORATION WITH ARMANI.

HER CLOTHING RANGE WILL CONSIST OF DENIM AND LINGERIE FEATURING HER R LOGO AGAINST ARMANI'S LOGO. THE COLLECTION WILL HAVE BIKER JACKETS, BACKPACKS, SKINNY JEANS AND BOYFRIEND JEANS, T-SHIRTS WITH RIHANNA'S FACE ON IT, AND ALSO LACE UNDERWEAR IN NAVY BLUE AND GREY. THE WHOLE STYLE IS VERY BIKER CHIC MEETING RIHANNA-ON-A-LAZY-SUNDAY.

WHILE I MAY HAVE SOME TROUBLE REMEMBERING HER SONG LYRICS, I DON'T HAVE ANY DIFFICULTIES RECALLING WHAT SHE WORE ;)
